Professional experiences include: Cheryl joined The NMSU School of Nursing as a full-time College Assistant Professor in January 2013. She has been a Registered Nurse for 22 years and an Advanced Practice Nurse for 6 years.
Cheryl worked at Memorial Medical Center for many years. She started her medical career as a unit secretary and was also a student at NMSU. Upon graduating, she began immediately on the Telemetry unit as a brand new nurse. Throughout her 16 years of being an RN, she has worked in a number of units including: Telemetry, Cardiology, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Women’s Health, Medical-Surgical, Ambulatory Surgery and Ob/Gyn.
Cheryl was lucky to be part of the opening of the second largest hospital in Las Cruces, Mountain View Regional Medical Center. She helped to open the Emergency Department, eventually becoming an Administrative Nurse Manager (ANM) and was also the interim Med-Surg Director. A third hospital was now coming to Las Cruces, the Rehabilitation Hospital of Southern New Mexico. Mrs. Lombardi was hired as the Director of Nursing (DON) and again, was part of planning, hiring, organizing and opening the 3rd hospital in Las Cruces.
Cheryl decided to go back to school and work towards her Masters of Science in Nursing. She received her degree in 2008 and became Board Certified as an Adult Certified Nurse Specialist (ACNS-BC). As a College Assistant Professor, she has found that students truly touch her heart, “as they are our future of healthcare and may actually care for all of us. I enjoy the profession of education and hope I make a difference to students and am helping them to become the best nurses they can be!”
