Dr. Shaw was inspired to be a nurse by her mother Bonnie McGrew, RN, who was a nurse for 25 years. Dr. Shaw decided to pursue a profession in nursing after serving as an evangelistic missionary in Papua New Guinea for three years. After returning to the US and relocating to Las Cruces, NM, she applied to the NMSU nursing program and graduated in 2000. Her work as a staff nurse included labor & delivery, hospital-based dermatology, and clinical cardiology. In 2009, she graduated with her Master's of Science in Nursing, with a Family Nurse Practitioner emphasis. She has worked in medical dermatology, allergy/asthma immunology, otolaryngology, urgent care and family practice. Her main focus of practice has been in the diagnosis and management of skin diseases with an emphasis on skin cancer. In 2018 she became a Dermatology Certified Nurse Practitioner and is currently the only DCNP in Southern New Mexico. In 2022, she graduated from the University of Arizona with a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. Her DNP project focused on skin cancer prevention behaviors in patients who have already been diagnosed and treated for skin cancer.
